The day’s news, in plain English.
Twenty real stories from real outlets, rewritten so anyone can follow them, and scored for bias, controversy and credibility.
What Tews is
Most news apps optimise for what keeps you scrolling. Tews optimises for what is genuinely being covered.
Stories come from Google News’ own ranked topic feeds and are ordered by how many separate outlets are running the same story — a direct measure of how big a story is, rather than how well it matches a search phrase. Nothing is randomised, and nothing is personalised into a bubble. Every headline links straight back to the publisher that wrote it.
How it works
Real headlines, free
Current, widely-covered stories arrive from Google News RSS. No API key, no quota, no charge. This stage alone gives you a complete, readable paper of genuine linkable news from named outlets.
Plain English and metrics
Google Gemini reads those real headlines, works out what each story is about, rewrites it simply, and judges its metrics from that understanding. This stage uses your own free Gemini API key.
If the second stage is unavailable — no key, quota spent, offline — the first stage’s real news still stands, and the app tells you why the summaries are missing instead of failing silently.
The scores, and what they honestly mean
Every story carries six numbers:
- Debate — how disputed the subject is
- Agreement — how far informed observers would agree on the core outcome
- Sources — how many major outlets a story this significant would draw
- Reliability — how much weight this outlet carries on this subject
- Bias — how much editorial slant this subject normally attracts
- Fact-check — how well established and checkable the core claims are
Be clear on what these are. They are an AI model’s assessment of each story’s subject, formed from the headline and the outlet. Tews does not crawl the web, does not read the full article, and does not check claims against primary sources. The numbers are a calibrated judgement, not a measurement — and the app says so on screen rather than implying otherwise.
Features
- A daily edition of 20 stories across World, Politics, Technology, Economy, Science, Culture, Health, Sports and Local News — choose the sections you want.
- Compare — paste two article links and see where the outlets agree, where they diverge, and what each left out. Tews opens both links and reads the headline the outlet itself published.
- Verify — share any news link into Tews, or paste one, for a plain-English read on it.
- A bias slider that hides stories above your tolerance, so you can keep the paper calm on days you want that.
- Honest cover photos — the outlet’s own lead image, then Wikipedia, then free-licensed stock. When nothing genuinely matches you get a plain gradient, not a stock photo pretending to be the story.
- Tomorrow’s edition overnight, so it’s waiting in the morning. It’s a switch, and switching it off genuinely stops it.
- Light and dark themes.
What you need
The news itself is free and needs no setup at all. Open the app and today’s real headlines are there.
The plain-English rewrites and the bias and credibility scores run on Google Gemini and need your own free Gemini API key — about a minute to create at Google AI Studio. There is no subscription, no ads and no account. You bring your own key and spend your own free quota, so the cost of the AI is yours to see and control rather than buried in a monthly fee.
Privacy, in short
- No account, no sign-up, no ads, no analytics, no tracking.
- Your API key is stored only on your device, sent to Google as a request header rather than in a URL so it can’t leak into logs, and excluded from Android backup and device transfer.
- Location is coarse only — a city name for the Local News section.
- Nothing is collected by the developer. There is no server between you and the news.
On sources
Tews is a reader, not a publisher. Headlines, outlet names and links come from Google News RSS. Tews hosts no articles and claims authorship of no reporting. Every story links to the outlet that wrote it, and the original is always one tap away.
